1st Grade Instruments Unit Videos
In music class, 1st graders are learning about musical instruments. For each family, students are making observations and discussing things they find that are the same and different. We are also listening to recordings so students can hear what the instruments sound like.

One of the best ways to learn about musical instruments is to see and hear it in action. For each family, there are several videos that we watch in class - a few minutes of one, a few minutes of another. Students like to watch the whole video (and we never watch the whole thing in class) so I have included links below so students can watch at home. Please note, these links are to YouTube videos which will open in Safeshare.tv. Safeshare masks all content except for the video itself ... no comments, no related videos, or anything else that could be potentially objectionable.

4th Grade - Musical Instruments WebQuest
This week in music class, 4th graders will begin a group project in which they research and present information about musical instruments. Learning about instruments (what they're made of, what vibrates to make sound, what family they're in, what they sound like) is part of the 4th grade music curriculum and the study of instruments will be in the form of a WebQuest. A WebQuest is a web-based research project, typically with students working in groups, in which students complete tasks that are part of a realistic scenario. In this case, 4th graders are researching and selecting instruments to purchase for under-served children. While the scenario is imaginary, it is based on a program operating on the north side of Chicago.

4th graders have completed this WebQuest in past years but this year is a bit different. We are excited to be piloting two collaboration tools. Mrs. Ferdon is part of both pilot groups so students in Ms. Karasick's class and Ms. Sayner's class will work in GoogleDocs, Mr. McCulloch's class will work in Microsoft 365 and Ms. Eisenhut's class will be our "control group" and complete the project with paper/pencil.

Calling All Animusic Fans!!!!
We love Animusic and Animusic 2, here at Kipling School and, if you're like me, you've been anxiously waiting for Animusic 3. Animusic is a tremendously creative mixture of music and animation and everything you see and hear matches up - not just musically, but scientifically. The science of sound and force/motion can be seen in this educational yet entertaining package.

So why are we talking about this now, you ask? Today on Facebook, the fine folks at Animusic announced that they are "in production" for Animusic 3. I don't know what that actually means in terms of the release date but I will keep an eye out and let you all know!

While we wait, here is a video you can watch. It is basically a commercial for Intel, but it's nice to watch anyway. The people at Intel made robots and programed them to create a real-life (not living inside a computer) replica of Pipe Dream. Here is the link: http://www.safeshare.tv/w/OZBMeBWvfc.
3rd Grade - Recorder Rock
I'm so excited for our 3rd graders to have the opportunity to play with the 4th and 5th grade band and orchestra students on Monday, May 7th! The kids are doing a great job learning the song and, even though it looks long, we know that there are just a few different melodic ideas. I've linked some resources, below, that kids can use at home as they work on the Recorder Rock. The audio file is the same one Ms. Butterfield sent to us and I also used it to make the play-along video.

Listen to the song: audio file
Look at the song: middle section, beginning and end, whole song
Play along with the song: see the letters and hear the melody

Have fun!!

3rd Grade - Guest Speakers
In music class today, students in Mrs. Stein's class and Mrs. Lathan's class had two guest speakers. To kick off our Instruments Unit, these DHS juniors talked to us about musical instruments and played for us. To finish off the presentation, we watched part of a DHS Orchestra concert (all four families, not just strings) at Symphony Center in Chicago.

Finlandia, by Jean Sibelius:
Mrs. Ferdon videotaped the presentation so, if you are in Mrs. Hoglund's class or Mr. Lombardi's class, you will see our guest speakers' presentation a few music classes from now.
3rd Grade - Expanding Intervals Song
Our final test song of the year, for third grade, is Expanding Intervals. A copy of the page is going home in backpacks (Tuesday, 4/24) and you can download a copy by clicking on this link: Expanding Intervals PDF.

Testing dates:
  • Lathan and Stein: Friday, May 4th
  • Hoglund and Lombardi: Monday, May 7th
Remember, for testing you can look at the page (either side) and will play by yourself. Playing alone means you can play at whatever speed you like best and it's easy to hear yourself and adjust if it sounds too loud. When it's your turn to plauy, other boys and girls will have something to work on and won't actually be paying any attention to you.
4th Grade - Ode to Joy Recorder Testing
4th graders in the Deerfield schools play Ode to Joy and are assessed using a common rubric (click here to see what you will be graded on). For testing, students will play alone and can play at whatever speed is most comfortable for them. They will have a copy of the music to look at and can choose between the page with letters or without and can choose between the side with the "real" line three (BCB, high D) or the side that uses left hand only (BBB, high D).

Ode to Joy Testing will be on your second day of music this week:
  • Karasick: Wednesday, April 25th
  • Sayner and Mr. McCulloch: Thursday, April 26th
  • Eisenhut: Friday, April 27th
When we practice in class, sometimes we play along with a recorded accompaniment. Here are some audio files you can play along with at home:

Ode to Joy 71.mp3
Ode to Joy 77.mp3
Ode to Joy 83.mp3
Ode to Joy 91.mp3
Ode to Joy 100 (original speed)
4th Grade - Wakko's America
In music class, 4th graders are learning a song that will help them learn the states and their capitals - Wakko's America. Here is a link to the video students watched in class: http://www.safeshare.tv/v/eAII411eqPg. For those who would like to sing along at home, here is the audio file: Wakko's America.mp3, and a copy of the song words: Wakko’s America lyrics.pdf.
