 PTO Committee Descriptions

FUNDRAISERS
  • Book Fair: A one to three day sale, with a percentage of sales going toward the PTO. Committee coordinates volunteers, related activities (e.g., raffle), and other aspects of the event.
  • Wrapping Paper: Committee oversees PTO's biggest fundraiser selling wrapping paper and accessories. 
  • Spirit Sales: Manages sale of Wilmot-imprinted clothing and accessories. 
  • Grocery Bucks: Monthly sale of gift certificates from various merchants for which the PTO receives a percentage. 
  • School Supplies: Sale of pre-packaged school supplies for all grades. Includes distribution of school supplies at the beginning of the school year and spring sale of supplies for the next year. 
  • After School Activities: Extra-curricular, after-school classes offered for a nominal fee. Committee coordinates hiring of teachers, publishing information about classes and registration, and collecting registration fees and forms. 
  • Holiday Shop: Gift boutique where students can do their own holiday shopping at very reasonable prices. Committee starts in the summer by shopping for items to sell, then coordinates volunteers to wrap items and help during the actual sale. 
  • Market Day: Quality food shopping service brought to the school with a percentage of sales going to PTO.

EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT

  • Cultural Events: Brings several special cultural programs to the students each year. 
  • LMC Coordinator: Coordinates parent volunteers to work in the LMC (library) throughout the year. 
  • Celebration Books: Works with the school librarian to maintain and promote a list of books families can purchase for the library in honor of a child's birthday or other occasion. 
  • Art Smart: Coordinates volunteers to teach programs that acquaint students with art of all kinds, usually during their art class or through a school assembly. 
  • Student Book Club: Coordinates parent "teachers" for this reading enrichment program held for 2nd through 5th grade students during lunch recess. 

SERVICE

  • Service Projects Coordinator(s): Organizes various school-wide projects
  • Book Fair: A one to three day sale, with a percentage of sales going toward the PTO. Committee coordinates volunteers, related activities (e.g., raffle), and other aspects of the event. 
  • Fun Treats: Purchases frozen novelty desserts through vendors and sells the treats to children once a month at lunch. 
  • Before School Care: Coordinates program to provide care before school for Wilmot children. 
  • Fun Lunch: Coordinates sale of special lunches from local food vendors.
  • Kindergarten Lunch Bunch: Coordinates a one-hour class of lunch, crafts, and play for kindergarten students. Recruits teachers, manages registration, and coordinates schedules.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

  • Membership: Collects PTO membership forms and publishes the Wilmot School Directory. Solicits advertising from local businesses (particularly Wilmot-family businesses) for the directory. 
  • Family Events: Often split into separate committees, they organize a back to school event, Bingo night, a late winter event and the end of year party.
  • Hospitality: Organizes Teacher Luncheon, PTO Appreciation Luncheon, and refreshments for PTO monthly meetings.

COMMUNICATOINS

  • Weekly Newsletter Editor: Editor who types and publishes the PTO's Wilmot Weekly, which goes home with students every Friday.
  • Webmaster: Maintains and updates the PTO Web site.
  • Health & Safety: Plans and implements programs that promote the health and safety of Wilmot families. Past programs have included CPR/First Aid Certification, Bike Helmet Sales and speakers.
  • Environmental Awareness: Instills an appreciation for environmental concerns in Wilmot students through various activities in and around the school. Activities have included Trashless Thursday, recycling projects, sale of environmental t-shirts, etc.
  • NSSED Liaison: Serves as liaison between the Association of Parents and Staff (APS) for the Northern Suburban Special Education District (NSSED) and our school for the current School year.
  • Sunshine: Sends cards and gifts to Wilmot children, parents, and staff in the event of illness, injury, birth of a child, etc. Also coordinates parent volunteers to provide "meals on wheels" for Wilmot families when needed.
  • New Family Lifeline: Our PTO "Goodwill Ambassadors." Makes families new to Wilmot feel welcome and wanted. Organizes New Parent Coffee (or similar event), matches new families with "experienced" Wilmot families to give them a friend to call with questions. Promotes the PTO with a welcoming attitude.
  • 5th grade Speaker/Parent & Daughter Tea: Hire speaker for the 5th grade parents’ human growth talk and coordinate the parent/daughter 5th grade tea.
  • Disability Awareness: Organizes programs that increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of people’s differences.
  • Parent Network: Ideally a parent from 4th and 5th grade would represent Wilmot and work with other parent networking groups from the other schools to find a speaker for the parents that deals with current issues within the schools as well as the community.
  • Membership: Coordinates all of the information for the Wilmot Buzz Book.  All information is thoroughly checked and rechecked.  Copies are printed and distributed throughout the school to those who purchased.
  • Service Projects: Coordinate monthly service projects for individual grades from 1st through 5th grades.  Different non-profit organizations are picked for the year and the group works together to make signs, boxes and spread the word around to the school what is being donated for the month.  This is done over the lunch hour so to volunteer you would need to be available from 11:40-12:40.

AD HOC

  • Yearbook: Help organize a Wilmot Yearbook.  Organize volunteers to take pictures within the classrooms and help create and edit as well as develop a lifetime of memories for the students.
  • Box Tops/Escrip: Oversee and organize the Box Tops that are collected by the students throughout the year and turn into the company for credit.
  • Barnes & Noble Day: Organize a one day fundraiser with Barnes and Noble in Deerfield.  This can be done once or twice in the year depending on the interest.  Coordinate with Wilmot’s art teacher to gather students artwork and hang up for the day at Barnes & Noble.
  • Read to Succeed: Coordinate the sheets for each student to take home and fill out over a one month period.  Each student that hands back a parent signed sheet will get a free pass to Six Flags.   Once the passes are sent you will need to distribute the participating students.
