We will be exposed to five units in mathematics. Our new curriculum is called Big Ideas. The units are Measurement and Data, Fractions, Numbers in Base 10, Algebraic Thinking, and Geometry. Unit tests will be assigned along with
practicework using in class and online programs. Our websites most often used in math will be Freckle and Khan Academy.
Lucy Calkins Units of Study Writing is our curriculum. Students write narratives, news articles, informational pieces and explore all details of good writing including leads, transitions
andword placement. In a workshop model, we will begin with a mini-lesson, time to write, conferencing and sharing out. Our goal is to have what we read in books show in our writing!
We will be using Units of Study Reading, by Lucy Caulkins. Students will be reading silently and with groups, respond to reading in class and with groups. There are 6 units in the program that range from memoir to historical contexts. Lessons begin with a mini-lesson time, followed by independent reading and conferencing. We will be also in Book Talks with members of the class using at times a class novel or leveled books. We share our reading at the conclusion of the lessons. Our focus will be on finding the "what" in our reading.
Through our studies, we will be completing projects along the way! Often, the themes are embedded in other content areas of class.
The 3 units in science are listed below. We will also be using programs in science called Discovery Education and Mystery Science.

- Physical Science
