Stronger Together Deerfield

In January 2024, the District convened a foundational community event called Community Well‑being and Safety Night. Featuring experts from the District’s Safety and Security team, Deerfield’s police and fire departments, and groups like Be Smart (gun‑safety) and LEAD Illinois, families and officials discussed pressing concerns related to mental health and resilience. These early conversations opened doors to more structured community engagement.

In the fall, District 109 established its first Community Advisory Council—an inclusive group composed of parents (current and retired), educators, municipal leaders, and representatives from Deerfield Police, the Park District, and local organizations. Over breakfast meetings, council members discussed district-wide challenges—like policies that limit student independence—and brainstormed proactive solutions. This ongoing dialogue gives the District direct, diverse feedback on community needs and aspirations.

As concerns about youth anxiety persisted, District 109 engaged with groundbreaking ideas like those presented by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt in The Anxious Generation, which links smartphone culture to rising youth mental-health issues. To help families explore these ideas, building-level parent nights were held, unpacking the book’s key themes and identifying strategies tailored for Deerfield children.

In spring 2025, District 109 hosted a signature event—a panel featuring pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Schott; psychologist Dr. Lisa Novak; South Park Elementary Principal Dr. Marcie Faust; and ER physician Dr. Ben Feinzimer. Parents completed a live ThoughtExchange survey revealing common stressors: hectic schedules, limited family time, and excessive screen use. Panelists then shared real-life observations and practical guidance—from managing screen time to encouraging independence.

Representatives from Deerfield Police and Fire, the Park District, Public Library, Township offices, and District 113 (Deerfield High School) were present. Families had the opportunity to explore resource tables—learning about programs like the Wait Until 8th Pledge (smartphone timing), Let Grow (child independence), and “Safe Screens” workshops led by the police. The event sparked lively conversations and grassroots recommendations for building resilience and balance in children.

Feedback from the evening’s ThoughtExchange showed a clear desire for greater resilience and independence—and an understanding that community support can remove barriers to achieving these goals. District officials emphasized ongoing progress and change, including advocacy for more free play, reduced screen time, and deeper community bonds.
