Communications
The communications department is dedicated to providing open, honest, and ongoing communication with our stakeholders. We aspire to keep our stakeholders informed about the goings-on in our district and the exciting opportunities offered, primarily using student and staff voice. The communications team collaborates with our community partners to build strong working relationships. These relationships form a strong community bond that encourages engagement within the district.ย

What's Good in 109?๐ง
We are here to share the good things that are going on with our DPS 109 students and staff!
This year both Shepard and Caruso Middle Schools started a new club, Junior Model United Nations! Thanks to a few 109 alumni over the summer, a robust program was developed for our current middle schoolers to learn about the Model UN procedure and participate in a competition, along with other neighboring school districts. These students had the challenge of learning a new activity and strategizing how they would debate the provided topic from the lens of their assigned country. They collaborated with students from neighboring districts and created solutions to later vote on.
What a great example of our mission in action, plus, watching middle schoolers get energized about parliamentary procedure is definitely something to celebrate!
Our students got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to report the news, from fact-checking every detail to making sure all sides of the story are told. They even got to see the equipment in action! A big shout out to NBC Chicago for taking the time to visit our CMA classroom and answer all our questions. Check out these pictures and more on our Facebook page!
Is it plastic? Is it yarn? It's Plarn!
October 4th we held our first Bluestem First Friday event in our LMC! Fourth graders gathered around to read one of the Illinois Bluestem Award book nominees, Washed Ashore: Making Art from Ocean Plastic. Fourth graders worked with Gratitude Generation to make plarn (plastic yarn) out of grocery bags, which will be crocheted into sleeping mats for those without access to reliable shelter. Check out more on our Facebook page!
We've got a bunch of little entrepreneurs here in 2nd grade! To finish up their social studies unit, second graders created items to sell to other students in different classrooms View more images on our Facebook Page
