Child Find Screening

Deerfield Public Schools District 109 participates in an ongoing process of locating, identifying, and evaluating preschool children ages three to five who may show delays in one or more of the following areas:

  • Cognitive Development

  • Social, Emotional or Behavioral Skills

  • Speech-Language

  • Fine or Gross Motor Development

  • Pre-academic Skills

  • Vision or Hearing

If you are unsure if your child is meeting age-appropriate developmental milestones, share your questions or concerns with your child's preschool teacher and/or pediatrician.

Birth to Three

If your child is younger than 2 years 9 months and showing delays, contact Child and Family Connections (847-377-8931), Lake County's early intervention program. Early intervention is a system of services that helps babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities. Child & Family Connections also helps families find services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy. 

The District is responsible for transitioning children at age three to the District 109 Early Childhood Program. Child & Family Connections notifies District 109 of a child in need of transition when they reach the age of 2 1/2. The District has up to six months to complete any additional evaluations the team recommends and then meet with parents to discuss whether continuing intervention is needed. Developmental Milestones

Developmental milestones are things most children (75% or more) can do by a certain age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists these milestones, and provides a checklist to help families track their child's progress.
