The Wilmot Word: 11-9-18

This Week at Wilmot
Our students have been very busy this week at Wilmot. Students were observed in vocabulary lessons, even using Greek and Latin roots in our upper grades, to better understand words and their meaning. In STEAM 4th graders were observed wrapping up their first set of rotations as they completed reflections on units that they have worked on for several weeks. Students created amazing projects using tools such as Lego We Do and Makey Makey kits. If you want to learn more about STEAM, ask your children to share their reflections with you. Others in STEAM used Toontastic to create, narrate and bring to life their own stories by turning cartoons into movies. In fifth grade, students dissected owl pellets in science to learn more about the behavior of owls and the complex nature of the food chain. Our wonderful student artists have created beautiful fall projects. Check these out when you are in the building for conferences.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks - Yesterday another group of students joined Mrs. Dubin and the seniors at Brentwood for an afternoon of art with the residents. This experience is a benefit to all involved and provides a wonderful opportunity for students to help and show kindness to others. Fifth graders held their second town hall meeting this week. We talked a lot about ways to treat others and our school with respect and kindness. Students shared a lot of great ideas on how we can make Wilmot clean, safe and fun. I am looking forward to developing an appropriate music playlist for the lunchroom using the awesome ideas shared by students. I have also included a picture of three kindness rocks made for me and Mrs. Santella, by Abigail R. and Emily G. I love watching our students spread the message of kindness. Thank you, girls!

I also wanted to share pictures of the board we made to honor our Veterans. Students were invited to decorate a star (representing emblems found on military uniforms) to commemorate a veteran that the student knows or knows of. Many students colored their star and several included a photograph. I would like to personally thank any member of the Wilmot community who has served our country.

Parent Conferences (5th posting)
Parents and guardians may now sign up for parent-teacher conferences. We will hold our annual parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 19 in the evening and all day on Tuesday, November 20. All elementary schools will have parents sign up for a conference through Family Access. To do this, login to Family Access and follow these simple steps:
At the Homepage, click on Teacher Conferences on the left-hand side of the page.
Choose your child’s name from the drop-down scheduler menu or you can view all of the children attending Wilmot at one time.
Next to each child’s name, choose “All Conferences.”
Select a time to view the teacher’s availability.
Select the time you want for your conference.
Click save
If you need to reschedule, click the View Scheduled Times tab and change the status to Unschedule. Then, reschedule for a time slot that meets your needs.
If you want to see what the conference scheduler looks like, check out this one minute video.

I look forward to seeing all of our parents during conferences.
