The Wilmot Word: 11-16-18

This Week at Wilmot
Students and staff have been hard at work this week. On Monday night our 3rd-grade teachers presented an overview of their daily classroom meeting to the Board of Education. Our teachers shared videos of students participating in this meeting, which is designed to build community, foster positive student relationships and provide opportunities for students to use speaking and listening skills. This type of activity has proven to be a great strategy for supporting a positive school culture. Kindergarteners loved meeting with their buddies this week during writing conferences. This is a great way for our youngest students to receive feedback and support from older buddies. Our student council held their monthly meeting this week and began planning events to promote school spirit and support our community with donations to Orphans of the Storm and the Deerfield Food Pantry.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks In preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday, some of our fifth graders worked showed kindness by working with their second-grade buddies to make turkeys expressing what they are thankful for. Team Give has also been hard a work, showing kindness with our annual coat drive. As a reminder, Team Give is collecting coats and winter wear to help children and families stay warm this winter season. Donations will go to the Oasis Mobile Home Community (children and adults) in Elk Grove. Many of these families do not have winter clothing to keep them warm. We are collecting new or gently used winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves through November 19. Bins are located in the Wilmot Foyer.

Wilmot is continuing our transition from traditional holiday parties to school-wide philanthropic parties that allow us to spread kindness as a school community to those in need. Please consider making a donation to support the Wilmot Team Give Philanthropy Club along with the entire Wilmot school for school-wide philanthropic activities that will take place in December and in February. Click here for more information. Students and parent volunteers will be collecting donations during parent conferences.

Progress Reports in Family Access
Student progress reports for all students (K-5) will be posted in Family Access TODAY at 3:00. As a reminder, we use a standards-based progress report, which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and our standards-based instruction. If you have an interest in better understanding the standards, as they are reported on our updated progress reports, please click here to read an explanation of what they mean.

Student Handbook Acknowledgment
We continuously monitor ways to keep our students safe and protected while using their school-issued devices. Recently, we have updated our systems to allow for greater controls over YouTube and other web content. The benefit of this improvement is that we can maintain a strong filter (so that inappropriate content is not accessible to our students), and, at the same time, provide our staff with the ability to approve videos they need to support their instruction.

Per Student Handbook protocols, we require that parents re-acknowledge the User Agreement Form when we make a change (please note that you must acknowledge that handbook for each child you have in District 109). You will be prompted to do this the next time you log into Family Access. Upon logging in, you'll be greeted with a page that you "signed" in the beginning of the year. Please, re-acknowledge receipt of the handbook for each child you have in District 109 at your earliest convenience. Thank you, and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Inclement Weather Guidelines - Is winter already here?
It seems as if the cold weather has started quite a bit earlier than usual. Please keep in mind that students go outside each day for lunch recess in addition to any classroom recess periods.

Many factors are considered when we make a decision regarding inside or outside arrival and recess. These include the temperature and the windchill, as well as the conditions of our playgrounds and blacktop areas (e.g. snow, ice or water). We will go outside if it is 20 degrees or higher and at or above 15 degrees with the windchill (assuming the playgrounds and blacktops are safe). The decision to go outside is often made right before recess, and therefore, we request that all students are prepared to go outside each and every day. Please send students with the proper clothing (labeled with your child's name) including long pants, a coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants etc. I know that many students feel more comfortable in the building wearing shorts. I am suggesting that students wear or bring pants to use when they go outside if it is below 50 degrees.

Lost and Found
Please check out the lost and found table when you are at Wilmot for parent conferences. We have a lot of coats, hats, gloves, sweatshirts and water bottles. We will donate all unclaimed items the week after Thanksgiving. The table is located near the front foyer.
