The Wilmot Word: 2-22-19

This Week at Wilmot
We had a short but busy week at Wilmot. Second graders had a great week engaging in many exciting learning experiences. Second Graders learned about the history of firefighters in Chicago as they begin a unit on the Chicago Fire of 1871. Deputy Fire Chief Ray Larson showed the students pictures of firefighting then and now and discussed how firefighting has changed over the years. Yesterday students visited the Chicago History Museum where they experienced hands-on activities to learn about “The Great Chicago Fire”. Students learned about the history of Chicago, including topics such as settlers, how our city has grown and changed, and they learned about the history of sports, culture, and architecture in Chicago. All students watched a movie that took them back in time to our city’s beginnings and through many time periods.

Mrs. Epstein’s class enjoyed hearing from their mystery reader and fourth graders have been creating amazing projects in STEAM! Last night Brody Shefren represented Wilmot at the 2019 Spelling Bee Section 1 competition held at South Park School. Congratulations Brody who is one of four students moving onto the regional competition in March.!

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks Today Fill a Heart 4 Kids delivered 250 birthday bags to children living in foster care, that our students made last week during our Valentine’s Day celebrations. Here is a segment from a press release Annie McAveeney of Fill a Heart has shared, acknowledging the wonderful gift we have given to hundreds of children who might not have a birthday celebration without our help.
Deerfield-based Wilmot School showered love and Kindness by packing over 250 Birthday Cake Care Packages for Fill a Heart 4 Kids©! This amazing tradition of giving back to the community has helped hundred’s of local foster children to feel loved and remembered on their birthdays.
Thank you to the awesome parents and students who delivered these birthday bags earlier this week!
