The Wilmot Word: 3-15-19

This Week at Wilmot
Third graders have been busy learning about the west and the California Gold Rush. I had the pleasure of teaching a writing class in Mrs. Han’s third grade this week. Students shared many wonderful stories about the west and taught me many facts about mining for gold. In Mrs. Doloughty’s class students had an opportunity to teach classmates how to play a Gold Rush game. Kindergarteners have been working hard on solving addition problems and second-grade students have been solving word problems with money (making change). Students have also been very busy building, making and creating in STEAM. Check out the pictures below of some amazing creations.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks
Wilmot continues to share kindness with others in our community. On Wednesday our 3rd grade Team Give students met with Mr. Cunningham from PADS (Providing Advocacy Dignity and Shelter). A local agency committed to supporting homeless individuals. Students developed an understanding of children who might struggle with having appropriate food, clothing, and shelter. Mr. Cunningham spoke about changing the way we think about what we do with the things we have and encouraged students and families to donate items ranging from toiletries to warm coats and shoes. Next week our Team Give students will be making “Blessing Bags” for the homeless filled with items such as socks, a toothbrush, and toothpaste, quarters and granola bars. Allowing students to make these bags supports the development of a kind and caring school and community.

Earlier this week Cailey from first grade shared a treat basket with me which included a special friendship bracelet. What a wonderful act of kindness. Today fifth grader, Jesse, asked if we could find a way to recognize his friend for his accomplishments in the spelling bee. This request was so kind and thoughtful.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) (New State Assessment)
Students in 3rd - 5th grade will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in early April. A Note From Emilie With The Kids Heart Challenge/Jump Rope for Heart
Hi Wilmot Elementary Families!
My name is Emilie, I am the American Heart Association representative who has been working with Wilmot the last 4 years on (formerly) Jump Rope for Heart and now Kids Heart Challenge. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Wilmot and I am SO thankful for all your help and support. Events like the one Wilmot puts on is not possible without your support—THANK YOU!
We are very excited to implement the Kids Heart Challenge tat Wilmot this year! Kids Heart Challenge has a lot of the things we loved about Jump Rope For Heart but there is one big difference: we are strongly encouraging kids to take a heart-healthy challenge. Illinois

We are very excited to implement the Kids Heart Challenge at Wilmot this year! Kids Heart Challenge has a lot of the things we loved about Jump Rope For Heart but there is one big difference: we are strongly encouraging kids to take a heart-healthy challenge! Challenges include:
1. Drink water over sugary beverages
2. Be physically active for 60 minutes each day
3. Do one kind deed every day
We are looking to you to help reiterate the importance of our challenge for your students and to thank you for helping us we have some fun incentives in place this year! Our school has a goal to raise $40,000 for the American Heart Association this year and our school district has a goal to be the TOP fundraising district in the entire state of Illinois. Because of this, we have some fun challenges in place to help us get there!

Challenge #1: If HALF of the students at Wilmot sign up at www.heart.org/kidsheartchallenge to take the heart healthy challenge (you’ll do this as you register), the American Heart Association will be giving Wilmot an extra $500 worth of new PE equipment!

**BONUS: FOR EVERY 10 STUDENTS REGISTERED IN EACH HOMEROOM, THE TEACHER WILL BE ENTERED INTO WIN AN AMAZON GIFT CARD AND THE CLASS WILL WIN A RECESS BASKET

Challenge #2: If your student raises $50 or more, they will be part of the special LIFESAVERS CLUB and earn a mystery duck keychain to add to their collection.
**BONUS: THE STUDENT WILL ALSO RECEIVE A TICKET TO A CHICAGO WOLVES GAME BY RAISING $50 OR MORE

Thank you again for your incredible support. Each year we are blown away by the generosity of the Wilmot community.
