The Wilmot Word: 3-22-19

This Week at Wilmot
Kindergarten classes boarded the Kohl Children's Museum Story Bus on Tuesday. Each class listened to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears told with puppets. They focused on characters, setting, and events in the story. Then they were invited to play in a make-believe environment inspired by the story, complete with a child-sized broken-down chair they could reassemble like a puzzle!

Third Grade celebrated Career Week with several activities related to the topic of aviation and the forces involved in flight. On Monday, Mrs. McWherter, a Wilmot parent and United Airlines pilot, shared a presentation about the daily life and experiences of a pilot. On Tuesday/Wednesday each third-grade class participated in an in-school field trip called Up, Up, and Away. The students did a number of experiments related to the forces involved in flight. The students reflected and shared what they want to be when they grow up.

On Thursday first and third graders enjoyed a night of the arts. First graders were fantastic in their Wiggly, Giggly, Squiggly performance of, Squirm, and enjoyed sharing artwork with parents and guests. Third graders showcased their they sang and played instruments during their musical, The Four Seasons. Congratulations on two amazing performances! Students also shared their artistic talents at our art fair. After reading the book, Little White Owl, first graders made their own torn paper collage owls. Students worked very hard on this project. Brightly colored cats and dogs can be found hanging on our walls. First-grade students created these using color, line, and patterns similar to the artist Romero Britto. Although spring is finally here third graders finished their beautiful snowy cardinal pictures. Third graders also “served” up a treat to their families sharing their fun paper mache ice cream sculptures. Making these ice cream sculptures is a wonderful tradition all third graders look forward to.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks
Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring a wonderful assembly today on bullying. Today BMX biker Matt Wilhelm shared his anti-bullying message with our students, encouraging them to stand up for others, stand up for themselves, and be a hero. Click here to learn more about Matt’s story of overcoming bullying to live his dream.
Second and third graders joined in the celebration of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) yesterday, March 21. Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21 (3-21), is a genetic disorder which is caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy chromosome 21.

To celebrate and recognize people with Down Syndrome (including our own Wilmot students), Wilmot second and third graders took part in the “Lots of Socks” initiative by wearing crazy, mismatched socks to school yesterday.

The ''Lots of Socks'' campaign was begun by an organization called Down Syndrome International to encourage people to start a conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion, and acceptance, as mentioned by downsyndrome.org.au. At Wilmot, we want to encourage and celebrate uniqueness in all of our students.

This week sisters, Olivia and Ella, shared a wonderful idea to share kindness with others. These students have asked to donate the toys/trinkets they have won by supporting the Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope for Heart) back to the American Heart Association to raise more money.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) (New State Assessment)
Students in 3rd - 5th grade will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in early April. This assessment replaces PARCC, which was administered to all 3rd- 5th-grade students last year. The testing window runs for Monday, April 8 through Thursday, April 18. Below you will find the schedule for all testing at Wilmot. If your child is absent they will be given a make-up assessment. Please avoid making appointments for your child during this assessment window.

Goals and Concerns Forms (1st posting)
Click here to find the Goals and Concerns Form. This is an optional form parents may use to communicate information for consideration when we make class placements for the 2019-2020 school year. The placement process is long and involved and our staff puts a great deal of time into making class placements that best meet the needs of all students. If you have specific questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. All forms are due by Wednesday, April 24.
