The Wilmot Word: 4-5-19

This Week at Wilmot
This was a great first week back following spring break. Now, we are just anxiously waiting for spring to arrive. Many students were observed writing about their spring break trips and activities. I have enjoyed hearing about special sleepovers, trips to the museum, family game nights and fun family vacations.

Yesterday fourth graders enjoyed a really cool in school STEAM program, presented by NIU’s STEM outreach programs. Students learned about energy, focusing on concepts relating to energy and its different forms. Students viewed experiments dealing with liquid nitrogen, light and lasers, as well as high voltage electricity to show how energy can move from place to place or change from one type of energy to another.

In art, many classes are working with clay. Third graders began new clay projects, observing how Mrs. Dubin safely cuts the clay. Students also reviewed vocabulary terms related to art and clay. Some examples of vocabulary include: incising, pinching, plasticity, coil and faceting.

I also had the pleasure of reading some student pieces about the American Revolution. Chase shared a wonderful piece of writing, written from the viewpoint of a soldier, in the form of a letter. It was so awesome to see student applying writing skills to social studies content. A group of girls used their creativity to make small origami pieces representing the Loyalists, King George, The Patriots, George Washington and the French.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks
Kindness was everywhere this week at Wilmot. As I walked through Wilmot I chatted with many students working in small groups on various projects. Students shared the importance of being kind when working with others telling me that it is important to work with all peers, to listen to others, to invite other friends to join their group I love watching students apply what they have learned about kindness to small group work.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) (New State Assessment)
Students in 3rd - 5th grade will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) next week, Below you will find a link to the schedule for all testing at Wilmot. If your child is absent they will be given a make-up assessment. Please avoid making appointments for your child during this assessment window. Please communicate with your child’s teacher if your child will arrive late or leave early during the testing window. If a child needs to leave during testing they will not be able to make up the unit at another time. As a reminder, it is important that students charge their Chromebook each night and have working headphones at school.
