The Wilmot Word: 5-10-19

This Week at Wilmot
This was a very exciting week as we hosted our first of two innovation nights. Students loved showing their parents what they do in school each day. Kindergarten students taught parents their Fundations (phonics) routines. These included activities such as building words, making and reading CVC words, putting sentences together, writing sentences, spelling with digraphs and the drill sound warm-up with our favorite friend, Echo the Owl. Families experienced kindergarten Fundations with their children who were such awesome teachers.

Second graders taught their parents how to create a Google Slide presentation on a self-selected topic. Students demonstrated how to upload pictures, add text and present a slide show. I saw wonderful presentations on topics ranging from Greece to otters and even one on geometry.

Third-grade students presented their group research on an endangered animal. Students shared many facts about their animals using trifold presentation boards, pamphlets, Kahoot quizzes and video presentations. I learned about whales, tigers, wolves and many other interesting animals. Students were able to tell me how their animals get food, how much they weigh and even where they can be found in the world.

There was a lot of action in the specials class. I saw students teaching their families how to bowl, hula hoop and complete exercises in the gym. I was tired just watching this happen. In art students shared the many projects that they have made this year, picked up amazing clay projects and even got to peek inside the kiln. Students also shared their musical talents. Second graders taught parents how to play barred instruments creating Question and Answer phrases and third graders played songs on the recorder. Kindy kids demonstrated how to use the Sketch-a-Song iPad app to create songs.

All in all, this was a wonderful event showcasing the skills and talents of our students.

On Wednesday evening we held our annual spring orchestra concert. Our students entertained us with a variety of songs. These students have grown so much since their fall concert. The highlight of the evening was a special tribute to Mr. Hoppe as this was his farewell concert after 11 years in the district!

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks
This week our PTO, Board and parent community showered kindness on our staff in recognition of teacher appreciation week. We enjoyed tons of yummy treats, breakfast, a coffee cart and wonderful lunch bags filled with treats. On behalf of the entire Wilmot staff I want to thank our generous PTO and parent community for showing your appreciation to our staff. On Thursday we held our annual parent volunteer luncheon with the PTO. This annual event allows us to thank the many, many parents who volunteer in various ways to support our school. We are so fortunate to be part of a school community where everyone works to support our students. Thank you!

When you arrive for the evening Art and Music Shows, please enter through the doors by the gym. The Art portion of the evening will begin at 5:10 pm and kindergarten students will meet their teachers in the gym at 5:25 pm. The music show will begin at 5:30 pm and is expected to last about 25 minutes. Following the performance, kindergarten students will meet their families on the gym floor. Artwork may be viewed after the music show if families are not able to do so earlier in the evening.

The Annual Wilmot Talent Show - 2nd-5th Grade Students (2ndt posting)
It’s time for our 5th Annual Wilmot Talent Show! Students in 2nd – 5th grade may be involved in this exciting event! In order to select prepared acts and participants, we will be holding auditions later than usual, during the week of May 20th. Please note that students will not have the opportunity to practice with a teacher until Dress Rehearsal. All practices should take place at home. Please use parental discretion regarding the content of your student’s act (music, lyrics, dance moves, costumes). Acts will not be included in the talent show if the content is inappropriate or students are unprepared on their scheduled audition date. All acts must be 90 seconds (1 min 30 sec) or less. If your act is longer, we will need to shorten it.

This year, in addition to group acts, we are encouraging video auditions! This will be especially helpful with students playing instruments. Talent Show Dates are as follows:

Tuesday, May 28th - Dress Rehearsal 3:30 - 5 (Mandatory)
Thursday, May 30th - Evening Show (5:30 pm)
Tuesday, June 11th –In School Show for staff and students only (Time TBA)

We will push out more information about auditions to classroom teachers as the audition and Talent Show date approaches.
Please contact Ms. Rallis (krallis@dps109.org) and Ms. LaCost (elacost@dps109.org) if you have any further questions!

Field Day 2019 (A note from our PE Teachers - Mr. Tallidis and Mr. Sheldon)
Calling all Wilmot parents and families!
Field Day is right around the corner on Monday, June 10th and we would LOVE to have as many volunteers as possible to help celebrate another great school year at Wilmot. Parent volunteers will help us run stations, encourage good sportsmanship and provide classroom teachers the opportunity to participate in events with their classes.
We are looking for half day (am - 8:50-11:30 or pm - 12:50-3:20) or full day volunteers. The more the merrier!
Field Day is only possible with the support of our INCREDIBLE Wilmot families and we truly appreciate any assistance that can be offered!
Field day will have some new and different types of activities that will support team building, collaboration and kindness.

Please email us if you are interested in volunteering for field day
Mr. Tallidis: stallidis@dps109.org
Mr. Sheldon: jsheldon@dps109.org
Thank you and hope to see you at Field Day :)

MAP Testing (2nd posting)
All students will participate in the spring MAP testing between May 13 - 24. Classroom teachers will share their individual schedules.

What to do if your child (K-4th) is not returning to Wilmot next year (2nd posting)
Email Dr. Brett as soon as possible at ebrett@dps109.org
Include your child’s anticipated last day of attendance at Wilmot.
Include the forwarding address or, at a minimum, the city and state you will be moving to.
The new school will send us a written request for student records after you have officially registered. All student records will be sent directly to the new school. If we know that you are moving we will prepare these in advance to decrease the time it takes to prepare and send student records.

PTO
School Supplies (3rd posting) - It’s time to order school supplies for the 2019-2020 school year! The PTO is offering pre-packed school supply kits from the Deerfield Coalition, which is a non-profit organization serving people with developmental disabilities. The sale runs from April 15 – May 31. Our teachers love the pre-packaged school supply kits which will allow all students to have the same set of supplies, ready to go on the first day of school. Parents love the program because it’s so much easier than running from store to store to get just the right items. We hope you enjoy the convenience of ordering school supplies online as well as the great prices we are able to offer by buying in bulk.
To order, visit: DeerfieldCoalition.com Questions? Contact Mary Beth Furman at DeerfieldCoalition.org or Anita Krishnan atabala18@yahoo.com.
