The Wilmot Word: 5-24-19

This Week at Wilmot
We had another exciting and busy week at Wilmot. We kicked off the week with a wonderful kindergarten night of the arts. Our youngest students did an amazing job as they performed fun songs including one of my favorites, Skinnamarink. The art fair included self portraits, Paul Klee watercolor resist fish and beautiful and colorful flowers. Thank you Mrs. Ferdon and Mrs. Dubin for this awesome night celebrating the arts.

On Tuesday fifth graders enjoyed their trip to the Art Institute. Students explored the museum and shared presentations throughout the day on a piece of art they have researched. This trip provided our students with a unique experience as many have not previously visited the Art Institute. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped make this trip possible. Tuesday was also a special day for me and Mrs. Santella, as we spent the day with our student principal and assistant principals for the day. Spencer, Lexi and Mattie did an amazing job leading our school. They helped get parents ready for the Art Institute trip, supervised the playground during arrival, completed our monthly safety check, visited classrooms and made a slideshow, which is displayed on the monitor near the foyer. They were very busy and very helpful.

I also spent time visiting with some third grade students during language arts. These students shared presentations with me about a book they had read. I learned a lot about animals that have saved/helped humans using their special skills and talents. I was very impressed with these detailed presentations.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks
Yesterday our student council officers and representatives welcomed new students to Wilmot. These students showered kindness on our visitors by giving them a detailed tour of Wilmot and by answering their many questions. This was a great opportunity for student leaders to help new students feel special and at ease with their upcoming transition to Wilmot. Thank you to the student council for organizing and leading these wonderful tours!

Field Day 2019 (A note from our PE Teachers - Mr. Tallidis and Mr. Sheldon)
Calling all Wilmot parents and families!
Field Day is right around the corner on Monday, June 10th and we would LOVE to have as many volunteers as possible to help celebrate another great school year at Wilmot. Parent volunteers will help us run stations, encourage good sportsmanship and provide classroom teachers the opportunity to participate in events with their classes.
We are looking for half day (am - 8:50-11:30 or pm - 12:50-3:20) or full day volunteers. The more the merrier!
Field Day is only possible with the support of our INCREDIBLE Wilmot families and we truly appreciate any assistance that can be offered!
Field day will have some new and different types of activities that will support team building, collaboration and kindness.

Please email us if you are interested in volunteering for field day
Mr. Tallidis: stallidis@dps109.org
Mr. Sheldon: jsheldon@dps109.org
Thank you and hope to see you at Field Day :)

PTO
School Supplies (5th posting) - It’s time to order school supplies for the 2019-2020 school year! The PTO is offering pre-packed school supply kits from the Deerfield Coalition, which is a non-profit organization serving people with developmental disabilities. The sale runs from April 15 – May 31. Our teachers love the pre-packaged school supply kits which will allow all students to have the same set of supplies, ready to go on the first day of school. Parents love the program because it’s so much easier than running from store to store to get just the right items. We hope you enjoy the convenience of ordering school supplies online as well as the great prices we are able to offer by buying in bulk.
To order, visit: DeerfieldCoalition.com Questions? Contact Mary Beth Furman at DeerfieldCoalition.org or Anita Krishnan atabala18@yahoo.com.

Summer Reading @ Deerfield Public Library!

Two Youth Service Librarians from the Deerfield Public Library will visit Wilmot students on Tuesday, June 11th to introduce the summer reading program, It’s Showtime At Your Library. The big kick-off for this program takes place on Saturday, June 8 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Deerfield Public Library. There will be fun activities such as a photo booth and face painting. The first 500 children to sign up will receive a beach towel. You do not need to have a Deerfield Library Card to sign up for the program. The program runs from Saturday, June 8th through Sunday, August 4th. This year all students work together to earn a gold, silver or bronze medal for District 109 based on participation.
