The Wilmot Word: 10-25-19

What A Busy Week
On Monday evening some of Mrs. Bonus’s students presented a Mad Science experiment to the members of the Board of Education. Students shared how they use communication skills, critical thinking, and creativity when they present science experiments to their classmates. These students did a great job and made all us proud.

Congratulations to Mr. Friel and all of our orchestra students at their first concert of the year! Students impressed the audience with all that they have learned in just a few short months. We look forward to their next performance in December.

Once again we had another fantastic Disability Awareness Week (DAW) at Wilmot. DAW is a very important part of Wilmot and reminds us of the importance of showing respect and kindness towards others, regardless of ability. Learning about differences supports a culture of kindness and inclusion. We kicked off the week with an all-school assembly where Ashley Eisenmenger shared her story as a vision-impaired marathon runner and triathlete. Ashley showed us how she reads using Braille and navigates her way within the community and during races and triathlons. Kindergarteners made puppets to celebrate how we are all alike and how we are all different, first-grade students learned about helping tool used by people with disabilities and second graders enjoyed the “Kids on the Block” puppet show to learn about being a good friend to friends with different disabilities. Out third grader students met Beth Finke and her service dog and learned how Beth’s dog supports her with basic tasks and keeps her safe. Fourth graders had an amazing presentation from GLASA (Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association) on adaptive equipment. Students experienced what it is like to play sports using a wheelchair and learned how challenging this can be. Our fifth graders spent the week learning about hidden disabilities and they also engaged in simulations to understand what it feels like to have various disabilities. Thank you to the many Wilmot parent volunteers who made this event possible!

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks - Yesterday our staff came together to show kindness by volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. Together we worked to package and box meals which will be sent to children in developing countries. I am proud to share that we contributed to preparing over 17,000 meals (and fun working as a team).

We love our Wilmot Bus Drivers!!!! Today is bus driver appreciation day. To honor the wonderful men and women who safely bring our children to and from school each day, we greeted our bus drivers with coffee, treats, and cards. Thank you to our drivers - Ms. Mo, Ms. Veronda, Brian, T.C., Larry, Shaneka and Holly!

Parent Conferences (2nd posting)
Mark your calendars - We will hold our annual parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 25 in the evening and all day on Tuesday, November 26. All elementary schools will have parents sign up for a conference through Family Access. If you have not already done so, please sign up for a parent conference. To do this, login to Family Access and follow these simple steps:
At the Homepage, click on Teacher Conferences on the left-hand side of the page.
Choose your child’s name from the drop-down scheduler menu or you can view all of the children attending Wilmot at one time.
Next to each child’s name, choose “All Conferences.”
Select a time to view the teacher’s availability.
Select the time you want for your conference.
Click save
If you need to reschedule, click the View Scheduled Times tab and change the status to Unschedule. Then, reschedule for a time slot that meets your needs.

If you want to see what the conference scheduler looks like, check out this one minute video.

It is best practice to hold one parent conference per child, to ensure that both parents receive the same information regarding their child’s strengths and needs. Therefore, I ask that parents sign up for one joint conference per student. If this is a concern, please reach out to me directly. We look forward to seeing all of our parents during conferences.
