The Wilmot Word: 12-20-19

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year
Mrs. Santella and I would like to wish the entire Wilmot community a happy holiday and a very happy and healthy new year. We are very grateful to be a part of this kind and caring school community. We look forward to seeing our students back at Wilmot on Monday, January 6, 2020!

What A Busy Week
The final week of 2019 has been an exciting and busy one. Everyone worked hard this week as we finished our MAP testing, completed special projects, visited the PTO holiday shop and checked out books to read over the break.

Fifth grade students participated in our culminating D.A.R.E. activities and graduation yesterday. Fifth graders have spent the past few months working with Officer Joanna from the Deerfield Police Department, learning about Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.). Students have participated in simulations, written essays and made posters that encourage others to remain drug free. On Thursday we had a visit from the K-9 unit, enjoyed a special D.A.R.E. pizza lunch and celebrated students at the D.A.R.E. graduation. Thank you to our fifth grade teachers and the Deerfield Police Department for bringing this important program our students.

Today we had an awesome assembly. Led by Brandon Lee, students collaborated with peers and created different LEGO structures while learning about positive character traits such as teamwork, problem-solving, and integrity. Our students enjoyed this fun and valuable hands-on workshop.

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks - Today our students used their artistic talents to once again give of themselves to others by decorating quilting squares to support Project Linus. Our students had a great time and were really creative as they colored these squares, which will be made into blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or in need of a special blanket. 5 Essentials Parent Survey
Parents across Illinois again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction

This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, it allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. Your responses also help guide district improvement.

To take the Parent Survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. Your identity and responses will be kept completely confidential and will not be connected to you or your child. The survey should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

In addition to parents, teachers and 4th through 8th grade students will also be responding to this survey in January. Per school board policy 7:15, you may opt your child out of any survey. If you would not like your child to participate in the 5Essentials Survey, please contact your building principal no later than December 20th.
