The Wilmot Word: 01-17-20

What A Busy Week
We’ve been busy this week! Students in our Project Runway, Jr. club have been very busy creating amazing outfits and accessories. In a few weeks students will have a special trip to Joann Fabrics where they will get a tour of the store and have an opportunity to make some special projects.

First graders were heard reading nonfiction books like experts. Students read about many topics and even identified nonfiction text features such as pictures and bold words. Students even set goals for reading nonfiction. These included: Find and think about words, chat about a page or the book, and stop and study each page. Parents, ask your first graders to share these strategies with you when you read at home.

Last night we had our annual winter band concert. Fourth and fifth graders did an amazing job under Mr. Zmuda’s direction. It is amazing how much they have grown since the fall.

A highlight of the week was the annual Wilmot Spelling Bee. Fourth and fifth graders competed in the school-level spelling bee with one student representing each class. I was so proud of these amazing spellers. Congratulations to Jasper our spelling bee winner and Kevin our runner up. The winning word was: symptomatic.

Kindness Corner
Once again Team Give is hard at work giving back to others in our community. Yesterday, second grade Team Give students made birthday cards for children who are ill. A representative from Bounce Children’s Foundation helped students understand how they can help chronically ill children thrive by making their birthdays special.

Student Council
The Wilmot student council will hold their annual book drive to support Bernie’s Book Bank from January 13-24. Our goal is to collect 1,500 new or gently used books. We will have collection bins across from the LMC.

5 Essentials Parent Survey
Parents across Illinois again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction

This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, it allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. Your responses also help guide district improvement.

To take the Parent Survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. Your identity and responses will be kept completely confidential and will not be connected to you or your child. The survey should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

In addition to parents, teachers and 4th through 8th grade students will also be responding to this survey in January. Per school board policy 7:15, you may opt your child out of any survey. If you would not like your child to participate in the 5Essentials Survey, please contact your building principal no later than December 20th.
