The Wilmot Word: 01-31-20

What A Busy Week
We had another great week at Wilmot. Over the weekend, fifth graders in our Project Runway Junior club had a field trip to Joann Fabrics. Students enjoyed a tour of the store and made special projects. Thank you to Mrs. Dubin for organizing this fun event.

Earlier this week I visited our four 1st grade classrooms. It was so much fun to see students engaged in different learning activities. Some students were learning to form letters during writing, and others were writing and publishing nonfiction chapter books. One class was learning about digital safety and discussed the importance of telling a grown-up if something makes them uncomfortable when using a device.

In the LMC students were enjoying reading with friends. Others were making unicorn posters/signs in anticipation of our upcoming author visit (for 1st-3rd graders) with Jason Thorp. Mr. Thorp is the author of the book, It's Okay to be a Unicorn. This book sends a wonderful message about being comfortable with who you are.

Today was the 100th Day of school!! Students enjoyed celebrating the 100th day with special reading, writing, math and art activities.

Valentine’s Day 2020
Once again we will follow the lead of our wonderful philanthropy club and give to others as we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Wilmot will celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing love for our community through a school-wide, hands-on service project. Staff and students will make “Birthday Bags” for children who may not otherwise have a birthday celebration. We will donate the bags to Fill a Heart 4 Kids to be given to children living in foster care. Last year we made over 250 birthday bags. Annie, from Fill a Heart 4 Kids, shared that some children told her that this was the first birthday cake they had ever had! On February 12, all K-2 students will work with their 3-5 buddies to decorate a birthday bag and make a birthday card; this craft project is similar to a typical holiday party project. On Thursday, February 13, buddy classes will come together to pack the items donated by our students and staff. During the day, students will exchange cards (without food or candy) in their classrooms as we have done in the past.

To assist us we are asking students and staff to bring in the party item assigned to their grade level by February 5:
Kindergarten - Candles/decorations/balloons
1st Grade - A set of party plates and napkins (must be packaged)
2nd Grade - Frosting (1-2 cans)
3rd Grade - Cake mix (1-2 boxes)
4th Grade - Cake mix (1-2 boxes)
5th Grade - Frosting (1-2 cans)
Staff - 9x13 - Foil pans

Based on parent feedback, students may also bring in a few dollars instead of the suggested items and we will purchase the necessary materials.

We will hold our annual 2nd and 4th-grade music programs and art shows on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Below is the schedule for these events. If you have children in both 2nd and 4th grades feel free to visit both art fairs in between concerts. School Resource Officer and Handicapped Parking Spaces
In the front parking lot, we have two designated spaces for individuals with disabilities. At no time should anyone park in these spaces unless you have the proper plates/placards or those with lines adjacent to these spaces. We also have a space reserved for our School Resource Officer, allowing Officer Maldonado to come and go as needed. Please do not park in that space either.

Speech Symposium (3rd - 5th Grade Students)
Students - Are you interested in acting? Giving Speeches? Speaking in front of an audience? Doing improv? Well, you should participate in the 21st Annual Deerfield Speech Symposium on Saturday, February 22nd! All 3rd-5th graders are welcome to participate in various events. If you have any questions or need more information, let Ms. Rallis know (krallis@dps109.org)! Hope to see you there!

5 Essentials Parent Survey
Parents across Illinois again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction

This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, it allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. Your responses also help guide district improvement.

To take the Parent Survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. Your identity and responses will be kept completely confidential and will not be connected to you or your child. The survey should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

In addition to parents, teachers and 4th through 8th grade students will also be responding to this survey in January. Per school board policy 7:15, you may opt your child out of any survey. If you would not like your child to participate in the 5Essentials Survey, please contact your building principal no later than December 20th.
