The Wilmot Word: 2-21-20

What a Busy Week
Everyone is very excited about our annual BINGO night, which is tonight in the Wilmot gym. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go to our new outdoor learning space, which will be built in the courtyard this summer. Our student leadership committee has worked with the architects to design a kid-friendly learning space. Check out the posters on display at BINGO tonight, to get a sneak peak of the new courtyard!

Students have been digging into new math concepts all week. In second grade I joined students as they represented 3-digit numbers using flats, rods and cubes. Fourth graders have been learning about the American Revolution and are beginning to research various events and people associated with the Revolutionary War. I loved joining a first grade art class yesterday. Check out the amazing paper owls our students made. In gym first graders were observed playing Pillow Polo during a week of review activities. They did a great job working with teammates.

2nd annual Wilmot-Caruso Volleyball Classic
Come out and cheer on the Wilmot staff as we challenge our friends at Caruso to a teacher volleyball game. Team Give has planned this event and all proceeds will go to a charity selected by Team Give. The game will be held on Thursday, March 5 at Caruso, right after school. More information is coming soon.

Student Social Emotional Learning Survey
We will be administering the social-emotional learning survey to students across the district in grades 3-5 next week. This is an online questionnaire, which asks students to reflect on their mindsets and approaches to learning. Overarching topics include grit, growth mindset, self-management, self-efficacy, and social awareness. We administered the same survey in the fall to all 3-5 students.

Student responses will be reviewed by building level teams. Information gathered can help teachers and school staff know more about your child. It can also support the development of lessons that may be beneficial for all children.

If you have questions about this process please let me know. Per policy 7:15, if you would like to opt your child out of the survey, please contact your child’s principal.

Lost and Found
Please ask your children to check the lost and found table or stop by the lost and found table if you are visiting Wilmot. We have many items that have not been claimed.

Complete Count Deerfield - 2020 Census:
Some Deerfield residents may be asking themselves, “Why participate in the 2020 Census?” A decennial Census is required by the U.S. Constitution and is conducted for an accurate and fair count of all persons living in the United States. The Census directly affects how billions of dollars in federal and state funding are allocated to state and local governments. Simply put, the more people counted, the more money allocated. Every person not counted means a loss of revenue for the next 10 years. Invitations to take the census questionnaire will arrive at most homes in mid-March.

Deerfield Public Library - Tournament of Books
The Deerfield Public Library is holding its 7th annual Tournament of Books! Students can vote online, in their school libraries, or at the Deerfield Public Library! Help the Library break last year's amazing record-setting 15, 639 votes by voting as often as you like!
