The Wilmot Word: 10-26-18

This Week at Wilmot
This was a great week at Wilmot! Our fifth graders have been busy recording their Halloween parodies, which we will share next week. This project was a wonderful opportunity to include all fifth graders in creating a Halloween Parody working in collaboration with peers. I am really proud of how hard our boys and girls have worked and cannot wait to see and share the final products. Mrs. Pettinger has also been having fun with her fifth grade Pokémon Card group. Students are enjoying this opportunity to play with friends as they learn new strategies from each other. Yesterday morning I had a wonderful opportunity to teach art to a few classes. I learned a lot from our students. These students worked hard making various projects such as letter boxes and stencil drawings. I was very impressed by the background knowledge our students have regarding famous artists and various artistic style. Mrs. Santella and I also had a short presentation by two awesome third graders, Arden and Eve, These girls made a prototype of a hearing aid they created at home based on what they learned during Disability Awareness Week. Way to go!

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks Kindness continues to permeate our school culture! Check out the picture of Joe holding the door open for me when he saw I had my hands full and couldn’t open the office door. Thank you, Joe! I also want to share a picture of a special kindness plaque that the Raymond family made for me. I love that our kindness message is being spread throughout our community. I also saw Timothy in 1st grade welcoming a new student and helping him find his way around the school. What a good friend.

On Wednesday we honored students from every 1st - 5th grade classroom and 3 teachers with a trimester 1 Spirit Award. Rather than giving our spirit awards out on the last day of school, our staff decided that we would inspire others by recognizing students and staff throughout the school year. Each class voted on 2 students to receive a Spirit Award based on their positive actions, kindness, and ability to consistently follow our PAWS expectations. Our staff voted on three teachers who also demonstrate these qualities. Just before dismissal we came together as a full school community and congratulated our winners with a spirit award parade, where students and teachers walked the hallways receiving high-fives from the entire school community. Congratulations to:
1st grade - Gabriel S., Lexi W., Ryan H., Danielle R., Ian G., Joie B., Mason T., and Amelia R.
2nd grade - Spencer H., Liza R., Kayla K., Jesse R., Kendall W., David P., Juliana S., Wil C., and Sasha M.
3rd grade - Sam N., Emily L., Harper F., Alex R., Emerson S., Tyler B., Serena W., Evan L., and Abby W.
4th grade - Nolan Z., Eli M., Mayson W., Adam K., Chloe F., Aiden F., Nikki P., Tommy D., and Siena S.
5th grade - Trevor G., Vittoria P., Sari G., Sam C., Eliana P., Jack B., Sophia K., Jake P., and Melinda Z.
Staff - Mrs. Salzer, Mr. Tallidis and Mr. Mike (Lesner)

Parent Conferences (3rd posting)
Parents and guardians may now sign up for parent-teacher conferences. We will hold our annual parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 19 in the evening and all day on Tuesday, November 20. All elementary schools will have parents sign up for a conference through Family Access. To do this, login to Family Access and follow these simple steps:
At the Homepage, click on Teacher Conferences on the left-hand side of the page.
Choose your child’s name from the drop-down scheduler menu or you can view all of the children attending Wilmot at one time.
Next to each child’s name, choose “All Conferences.”
Select a time to view the teacher’s availability.
Select the time you want for your conference.
Click save
If you need to reschedule, click the View Scheduled Times tab and change the status to Unschedule. Then, reschedule for a time slot that meets your needs.
If you want to see what the conference scheduler looks like, check out this one minute video.

I look forward to seeing all of our parents during conferences.

Destination Imagination
Thank you to those who were able to attend the Destination Imagination new parent meeting. Mrs. Tye, our district DI coordinator, shared a great deal of information that will help you and your child determine if DI is right for your child. Here is a copy of the DI presentation for those who were unable to attend the parent meeting. Please read this information sheet if your child is interested in participating in Destination Imagination.

Halloween Information (4th posting)
We will continue with a typical school day on the morning of Halloween and will hold all special events in the afternoon. Our students will participate in the annual Halloween parade (at 1:10) followed by a modernized version of our sing-along and fifth-grade parodies. As a reminder, due to space limitations, only parents/guests of 5th graders may join us for the sing-along and parodies (limited to two guests per student).

Students will change into costumes in the afternoon. To accommodate a busy afternoon we will move lunch up by ten minutes and start lunch at 11:40 am. The success of this day truly depends on parental cooperation and support. We want this to be a fun, inclusive and safe day for everyone.

In order to ensure that all students feel included it is essential that any group costume is open to everyone who wants to join the group. This is one area where we really need parental support to make this a positive experience for everyone. Without the support of parents and staff, we run the risk of creating an environment that is exclusionary and not supportive of a positive school culture and our kindness campaign.

Our daily safety procedures will remain in effect on Halloween. Every volunteer or visitor must sign in at the main office with a driver’s license. I suggest parents arrive 30 minutes in advance of any activity you are joining. You do not need to sign in for the parade as it is outside. However, I strongly encourage parents of 5th graders who plan to stay for the sing along check in prior to the parade.

For more information regarding our Halloween procedures please click here.
