The Wilmot Word: 11-2-18

This Week at Wilmot
This was such an exciting week. Halloween and fall activities were the highlights of the week. Our parade, sing along and the video presentation of the fifth-grade parodies provided a great opportunity to showcase the creativity, collaboration, and talents of our students. This year we moved our traditional parodies into the 21st Century by creating and sharing performances using technology. Essentially, students worked in groups to create their song and performed in a music video. Thank you to Mrs. Ferdon for leading us in an amazing sing along and for creating this opportunity to showcase of fifth graders in their parodies. I also want to thank our parents for assisting us in making Halloween a fun and safe day for students.

In case you missed it last week here is our latest edition of WESN (Wilmot Elementary School News)

Kindness Corner
#wilmotkindnessrocks - Throughout the week many students were recognized for following our PAWS principles: Practice respect, Act responsibly, Work together, Stay safe. Students receive a paw that identifies which principle they have followed and teachers inform students why they have received the paw. Promoting these principles supports our culture of kindness.

Halloween can, at times, create feelings of exclusion. I want to share a summary of an email I received about a current and former Wilmot student who went out of their way to include others and be kind:

A fifth grade student invited a friend who no longer attends Wilmot to join a Wilmot group of students for trick or treating, after learning this friend had no where to spend Halloween. After speaking with her peers, this former student was welcomed by a group and all of the kids had fun.

I am very proud of this student for showing kindness to others. Once again, I cannot stress enough the importance of parents and school staff creating and supporting inclusion in and out of the school setting.

Team Give also helped support kindness this week with our annual staff pumpkin decorating contest. This year staff decorated pumpkins with a movie theme. These were really cute and included pumpkins that looked like Wilbur the pig from Charlotte's Web, BB-8, Olaf, Jack-Jack from the Incredibles, Dori the fish, Little Foot, Jack Skellington, and our winning pumpkin, The Grinch (made by the 3rd grade team). Students voted for the favorite pumpkin and all of the money collected went to the winning charity (The ASPCA).
