Statement on Shooting in Highland Park

July 4, 2022 @ 1:45 p.m.

District 109 community,

On a day intended to be filled with celebration, our neighbors and our community have been rocked by the tragic and senseless events this morning at the Highland Park Fourth Fest.

We are working in collaboration with our civic and community partners, including Districts 112 and 113, to coordinate counseling support, assess the needs of our community, and determine how we can address the shared need together over the coming days.

At this time, we do not have any information about students or staff who may have been at the event as attendees. If you need any immediate support for your child, please email our Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Joanna Ford (jford@dps109.org) and she or a member of our student services team will reach out to you as soon as possible.

The National Association of School Psychologists has some resources about talking to your children about violence that may be of help.

The children of our community need us to rally together to be there for them now more than ever. We will be in touch when we have more information.

Sincerely,

Michael V. Simeck
Superintendent of Schools
