With this being Earth Week, we wanted to share a cool initiative being taken up by the Shepard Green Club.
Earlier this month, club members asked Shepard students to sort their waste from lunch into a number of different containers, so the waste could be analyzed.
In just one day between approximately 150 students (only about one-third of the whole student body), there were: 14 pounds of food items thrown away 11 pounds of plastic bags, paper bags, and food wrappers 11 pounds of dirty food containers
Shepard’s Green Club is meeting to study ways to encourage these numbers to go down, including promoting reusable containers and possibly partnering with the Village of Deerfield to start a composting program like so many homes in Deerfield now have access to.
